Maintenance for a vintage aluminium bodied car.

Maintenance for a vintage aluminium bodied car.

Aim

The aim of this program was that it could be done with what can be bought in a auto store in a regional town.

General (6-monthly cycle)

To maintain the polish on the vintage aluminium bodied car it will need to be cleaned on a 6-monthly cycle.
This should consist of;
Brush vacuum the car exterior and interior. Pay particular attention to the cracks and crevices.

Painted Surfaces;

Apply a wax coating.
Ensure you work cleanly and do not allow overspray or deposits of wax on the rubber on the running boards.
With a clean terry towel cloth place some (about 20 cent piece size) Bowden’s Own Carnauba Wax on the cloth and lightly wipe the surface in a circular motion. lifting and turning the cloth often and applying more Bowden’s Own Fully Slick to the surface. Ensure the surface is fully lubricated and that the cloth never drags. Apply in small areas and buff to a shine. Allow to cure for an hour or two.
Then apply a sealer;
With a clean terry towel cloth spray some Bowden’s Own Fully Slick on the cloth and lightly wipe the surface in a circular motion. lifting and turning the cloth often and applying more Bowden’s Own Fully Slick to the surface. Ensure the surface is fully lubricated and that the cloth never drags. Apply with one cloth then buff with another clean terry towel cloth.
If recoating is required allow to cure overnight.

Aluminium

Polish

Ensure no corrosion is starting. If an area has hand prints buff with California Custom Purple polish be careful to avoid splashing. Remember with this product less is better. Do not use the same company’s deoxidizer!

Maintenance Program Outline

Maintenance Program Outline version 1.01
Maintenance is often ignored in museums as it is easier to be reactive than it is to be proactive. No one questions the reactive emergency treatment whereas everyone will try and run off with the scarce funding for proactive maintenance.
This is more obvious  with the technology collections in museums tha all seem to assume are somehow very “Tough” and able to withstand abuse. There is also often a dose of reverse sexism as these things are deemed not to be “culture” but just “boys toys” and hence of little cultural worth. Unlike Art.

As you go home just think on the influence of these objects on your life - even your iphone needs maintenance in a museum context.

Short Term

Categories

Museum vehicles fall into three categories;
  •
  • [Functional]restored
  •
  • [Functional]original
  •
  • [Non-functional]
This guideline applies only to Functional Vehicles.
In general all functional vehicles require the following maintenance and excersise while in storage.

Maintenance

  • Inhibited Oil and lubricant changing every 2-4 years. (otherwise every 2 years)
  • Coolant changing Yearly.
  • Inhibited Hydraulic fluid changing 2-4 yearly.
  • re-grease 2yearly
  • Clean 6 monthly
    • initially 6 mothly
    • after a year yearly
  • Wash and polish (if app) 12 monthly.
  • Service 12 monthly
  • Waxing
    • initially 6 mothly
    • after a year yearly
    • if stored in carcoons

Exercise (all vehicles)

  • Wheel rotation every month.
  • Brake movement monthly
  • Suspension movement 6 monthly
  • Engine rotation 6 monthly
  • Transmission rotation 6 monthly
  • Steering movement 6 monthly
  • Oil circulation 6 monthly
  • Coolant circulation 6 monthly
  • Seal re-tensioning 3-6 monthly

Road run

  • Road run 30 miles every 4 months.
  • Preparation for road run
  • Qualified Drivers
  • Driver training
  • Licensing
  • 30-07-08
  • Definitions

Conservation management plan (Ongoing treatment profile)

What’s, how’s and why’s
  • Run
  • Exercise
  • Mechanical movement
  • Minor
  • Major

New Start

Ongoing treatment profile
  • Storage
  • Display
  • Housekeeping (Who - TA)
    • Inspect surfaces
    • Dust and vacuum
    • Inspect systems for leakage
    • Minor Mechanical movement
    • Wheels
    • Clutch
    • Brake pedal

Yearly (object Specific)
Long term (object Specific)
See below

Tend to be system specific
  • Eg a pivot point
  • Or a brake system

Examples must cover
  • Coolant systems
  • Lubrication systems (each noted individually)
  • Boilers, Fireboxes
  • Steam systems
  • Pneumatic systems
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Clutch
  • Brake
  • Power transmission
  • Electrical systems
  • Motors
  • Relays
  • Lighting
  • Transformers
  • Etc

Excersise

The following are examples

Movement – simple eg

  • door opening
  • rotation of wheels

Running/ excersise – complex - eg

  • Turning of engine while on diplay
  • 30 minutes on dynometer
  • 100 km drive mid paced
