Life limiting factors for technology preservation

Conservation protocols for operating the car
Write conservation protocols for operating the car - e.g. how fast, for how long, kilometres per trip, what to look out for before, during and after
Use
•    What are the "uses" of this car now?
•    Exhibition
•    Research
•    Community
•    Cohesion
•    Driving is secondary but a preservation nessesity
Pre work
•    Checks – As per period log book
•    Starting after a long layup (what's long?)
•    petrol
Pre- Checks –
•    As per period log book
•    All fluids
•    Nothing is loose or Odd
•    Tyres and suspension
•    Do systems work – brakes clutch
•    No odd sounds when started
Fluids
•    petrol
•    98
•    Additives VSR additive (why?)
•    Fuel preservatives
•    Oils, Brake fluids, coolant.
Starting after a long layup
•    Oil cylinders
•    Don't be afraid to use "start ya Bastard"
•    If the fuel was the old leaded I would not say this
•    Check systems
How often and for how long
•    Short term - less than a month
•    Medium term 1 -6 months
•    Longterm

Post work
•    How long will it be stored this time?
•    check fluids
•    Putting to bed
Putting to bed
•    fuel
•    Clean
•    Place in carcoon
•    Place on Jackstands

Monitoring
•    smell
•    sight
•    temperature
•    sound
•    feel
Driving –How?
•    Run to temperature  under load
•    Maintain at temperature 30 minutes minimum
•    Run at legal road speeds
•    This is not a Morris 8 or  Ford T
•    It has no brittleness – design or materials.
•    Spares are not a problem
•    The engineering is not unique
•    The car is unique
•    The cars history is unique
•    Its patina is unique
•    Be gentle and be respectful
•    Warm before revving, or over rev, suggest 75% redline.
•    don't overheat – ditto brakes -
Who can drive?
•    You already have an internal training system.
•    Use it –
•    a group of curatorial and technical (pursuit drivers) could access and authorise.
•    Chose drivers who have a historic car passion and empathy first.

Maintenance
•    minimal
•    As per handbook?
•    How long
•    Limiting factors
•    recommend
minimal
•    Pump brakes
•    Turn wheels
•    Rotate engine
•    6 monthly
As per handbook?
•    How often should it be serviced?
•    Spending most time unused
•    Resting and brinelling bearings...
Limiting factors
•    Fuel – 3 month
•    Brakes – 6 months
•    Coolant – 18 months
•    Greases – 2-3 years
Recommend for a 1970s automobile.
•    12 month major
•    24 month – change all fluids
•    3 -6 monthly exercise
•    Run to temperature  under load
•    Maintain at temperature 30 minutes minimum
•    Run at legal road speeds
Plastics

•    As for general interior
•    Remember they are getting more and more brittle as they age.
•    This is irreversible.
•    If you must use a "protectant" use the AutoGlym products.

Penrite Coolant additive _carboxylic acid corrosion inhibitor.
Or
Manufacturer recommended coolant (Alloy water cooled motorcycles)
